I recently sat down with a friend of mine, who does phone-sex work on the side, to ask her what it’s really like.
Confessions of a Phone-Sex Operator
What drew you to this line of work?
I’ve been in a long-distance relationship for six years, so I’m really comfortable with sexting and phone sex. When I realized that there was a demand for these services and that I could get paid well for doing something I enjoy, I jumped at it.
I’ve always been fascinated by the things that get people off—human sexuality is so varied and interesting. I’m really open minded and find it easy to talk about sexy things, so the idea of being a phone-sex operator made perfect sense to me.
Do you tell your friends and family what you do?
Yes! I’m not ashamed of my job. I think it’s a crucial service for a lot of people who wouldn’t otherwise have an outlet for their desires. Most of the people I tell are curious and somewhat amused by it. I mean, you can tell just by looking at me that I’m an unlikely candidate for sex work—I give off more of a librarian vibe—but that’s part of the fun.
I love challenging people’s perceptions. I even told my boyfriend, and he’s totally on board because he sees how happy and empowered it makes me feel.
How would you classify the types of services you provide?
There seem to be three main categories of callers: Those who want straight-up phone sex, those who have a particular kink they want to act out, and those who just want to talk.
I have two listings, one for sex and the other for conversation. Believe it or not, the conversational one gets the most traffic. My job is actually less about sex and more about connecting and providing a sympathetic ear. It’s kind of like being a therapist. When it does get sexual, though, it can be very intense.
What are some of the more interesting calls you’ve taken?
I have one caller who wants nothing more than to hear me pee, another who wants me to make her come at least three times a day by berating her while she’s dressed like a pirate, and one who masturbates while I read aloud from the owner’s manual of his Porsche 911.
I have been lucky thus far in that most of my callers have been respectful. If someone isn’t, or they want something creepy—like underage sex—I have no qualms about hanging up on them.
What’s something that surprised you about the job?
When I started, I thought I’d have to pretend to be someone I’m not. I passed myself off as a super fit twenty-something until I realized that I’m not that great an actor and that honesty sells. Now I’m just me (with a different name, of course).
One caller asked me what my measurements are, and I told him that I have no idea because I don’t care about that stuff. I thought I’d never hear from him again, but he’s ended up being one of my favorite regulars.
