Tips for Recovering from Porn Addiction

Last week I wrote the post: “Are You Addicted to Porn?” wherein I listed questions to help you decide if you have an issue that needs to be addressed. This week I offer you a short summary of some of the techniques that have worked for other guys in their efforts to break the habit. I found these suggestions on the website Your Brain on Porn which goes into detail about the way that porn changes your brain. The main purpose of the site is to help you to understand that porn addiction is a cognitive and physiological issue that requires changes to both your thought patterns and your routine to overcome. It’s not as simple as going cold turkey, but as the following suggestions show, there are lots of guys who have figured out ways to make recovery easier.

Delete or Destroy Your Stash
Whether it’s a collection of links or an old fashioned pile of tapes and magazines, you’ll want to limit temptation by ridding your environment of porn. You might be thinking of holding some back so that you can “test” yourself later. According to the guys on this site, that’s not a good idea. Your brain is going to try to trick you into thinking you can introduce porn back into your life, but once you do, it’s easy to fall back into old patterns.

Install a Porn Blocker on Your Computer
This will make it harder to access the porn in the first place, which means you’ll have to think before acting on your familiar impulses. Make the password something that you’re not likely to remember and hide it in a place that’s difficult to access. Basically, you want to create a barrier between yourself and porn.

Replace Porn with Healthy Activities
I recommended this in another post I wrote about overcoming sex addiction. It really is a good way to re-pattern your brain and body as it provides a new physical outlet as well as an alternative focus to your addictive behaviour. Try a new sport or hobby. Better yet, join a team or a club. This will make you feel more accountable for your actions.

Go as Long as You Can without Masturbating
The sexual dysfunction aspect of porn addiction is the result of not only alerted expectations of what sex should be, but also the physiological fact that there is only so much cum you can produce. Try to put off the reward of an orgasm for when you’re with your partner. If you find that you just can’t stand it and need the release, be sure to masturbate without the use of porn.

Don’t Give Up if You Have a Relapse
Overcoming an addiction is never easy. There are bound to be times when you slip up and fall back on old habits. The important thing is to forgive yourself and move on. Keep trying no matter what and don’t let a momentary weakness get the best of you. Just know you’re not alone and that you can beat this.
