What is mansome? UrbanDictionary defines mansome as ‘an adjective that describes a man who is both manly and handsome.’ Not only is this term entering our lexicon but it is also the title of a new documentary that explains what makes a man “mansome”.
What does it mean to be a man? Do women and men see masculinity the same way? Every man will give you a different answer, so too, the women around him.
Morgan Spurlock who directed Super Size Me along with Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Ben Silverman present the documentary Mansome featuring themselves and interviews with Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Adam Carolla, and everyday people. The men discuss everything from facial hair obsession to body dysmorphic disorder.
This comedic documentary forges into the depths of what it means to be a man in the 21st century. Probably more entertaining to men while informative to women. Manscaping has spread like wildfire. Not only are more and more men going for spa treatments, they are also becoming consumers of half the market’s grooming products.
Thirty years ago, grooming was seen as a woman’s thing and many men wish it still was. Not only have men’s expectations of themselves changed in regards to grooming, but also how women want their men to look has evolved. Sure, some men are oblivious to all of this but most are feeling the pressure as women – to look and smell a certain way. (Preparing for a big date? See our Grooming Tips to Get Laid.)
While some men prefer the au natural look and see this as the epitemy of manliness, others spend a good chunk of their time and money on facials, waxing, trimming, and tweaking. Some of these men are much more fastidious about their grooming habits than women.
A part of me feels sorry that men have to experience what women have for eons, that is, worrying about their looks and what the opposite sex is attracted to. But only part of me.
