Are You Addicted to Porn?

Porn addiction is an important topic to explore as I think that it affects so many men of my generation. I’m hard pressed to think of anyone I’ve dated in recent years who didn’t watch a lot of porn, and by extension experience some adverse affects. It is everywhere after all, and so easy to access. It taps into our brain’s most basic and rewarding pleasure centres and provides instant gratification with very little effort, so it’s no surprise that many of us become addicted to it. But how can you tell if you have a “normal” appreciation for porn, or an unhealthy dependency? The following list of questions will help you decide.

Do You Engage in Excessive Viewing?
The word “excessive” is somewhat relative, but basically refers to the point at which your porn viewing interferes with other really important aspects of your life. Do you watch porn every day to the detriment of your job or relationships? Do you feel out of control with regards to the hours of porn you watch?

Do You Need More and More Stimulation?
Maybe you used to enjoy fairly basic porn but find yourself needing to explore more and more extreme forms of it to get yourself off? Have you clicked on things that you know would have been completely outside your pre-porn comfort zone because you are craving the novelty of it? Do you find sex with your partner to be boring and unfulfilling compared to the payoff you get from porn?

Do You Experience Withdrawal Symptoms?
When you’re unable to get your fix do you feel irritable? Do you worry about not being able to engage in your regular viewing habits when you’re faced with changes to your daily routine? Do you plan your life around getting your porn fix so as to avoid the negative feelings of withdrawal?

Do You Struggle with Sexual Dysfunction?
I alluded to this issue in an earlier point, but it’s something I’ve seen first-hand time and time again. Excessive porn use can lead to an inability to enjoy sex with a real partner. Do you find it hard to stay in the moment during sex, or maintain an erection? Do you feel compelled to always act out scenes from your favorite movies with your partner?

Do You Use Porn to Alter Your Mood?
Maybe you had a horrible day or you’re just feeling off. Do you turn to porn before all else to make yourself feel better? Do you use porn as a source of comfort whereas before you would have relied on the company of a real person?

Answering yes to these questions could indicate that you have an unhealthy relationship with porn. Only you can decide if you need to make a change, but don’t be afraid to face it if you do.
